Only studio theme park Park in Japan Where visitors can observe the filming of the historical dramas

  • Entertainment

The ground of this park originally was a film studio built by a famous Japanese movie star in the early 20th century. A big number of famous films were shot here in the film thriving days. Then this place was referred to as the Hollywood of Japan. However, with the decline of the movie industry, period films lost their popularity and open sets were about to be abandoned.

In an attempt to preserve this open set, TOEI opened this park in 1975. It was a big hit. It became one of the main attractions of Kyoto soon. In 1989, the number of total visitors reached 30,000,000. Today the park has some million visitors annually.

Some of the shots of movies and dramas are still being shot here. In the park, you can see many film sets used in Japanese films and TV dramas.

Haunted house, Ninja experience, putting on costumes and so on require an additional fee. But several attractions are held for free at a corner on the street and theaters so that visitors can enjoy being there without paying extra. In a pond in front of an old house a dragon emerges every 15 minutes, and on a mountain top shrine a huge funny god comes out couple of times an hour. You can see samurai show and ninja show at a theater several times a day. Costumed girls and boys are walking on the streets, inviting visitors to the attractions. Most of the attractions are played only in Japanese, but it won’t be hard to understand for foreign visitors because of their exaggerated performance.

Restaurants are available in reasonable price and of course, there are shops selling Ninja and Samurai goods.

On the ground floor of Padios (joint word of park and studio), lots of Ukiyoe or floating world wood prints are exhibited and the method of making the art is shown. Some of them are sold there (Look at the price!).

On the second floor of Padios numerous “Masked Riders” hero figures in various sizes are exhibited chronologically. In Anime Museum also placed a number of figures produced by TOEI.

The park is located next to a temple called Uzumasakoryu-ji temple which is famous for its First National Treasure designated and regarded as the most beautiful image of Buddha in Japan named Miroku Bosatsu Hanka Shi-i Zo (a Statue of contemplating Buddha Miroku sitting with the right leg bent and resting on the left knee, in the virasana posture). His (or her) mysterious smile has been greatly admired and will fascinate you, too!
