The hub of sightseeing in Saga Arashiyama
Bamboo is a very popular plant in Japan and not only eaten as a bamboo shoot, but also used as a material to make up many kinds of things. Bamboo groves are often seen in Japan. Especially, in the mountains of the western part of Kyoto, there are many bamboo groves. But the one in Sagano area is the most famous because it is well cared and served as a sightseeing spot. Actually, it is very beautiful and has a special atmosphere. It’s worth visiting.
There are three ways to go to the place.
One is to take Randen, Arashiyama main railway of Keifuku Electric Railroad, to Arashiyama station. It takes about 5 minutes from the station to the place on foot. There are many stores and shops along the road which runs in front of the station.
The second way is to take JR to Saga Arashiyama station. It is a little complicated way, but if you take the way to westward from the station, you can get the place in 10 minutes.
The third way is to take Hankyu Railway to Arashiyama station. It is the longest way to get to the place and takes about 20 minutes. But on the way, you can enjoy the scenery of Arashiyama with Togetsu-kyo, a symbolic bridge of this area.
It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to pass through the bamboo grove. The most beautiful place is the west part of it, that means the end part of the path.
At that point, there are also three other places to go.
One way is to turn to the right and walk through a little path to Torokko Arashiyama station. There you can choose to take a tramcar that runs along the Hozu river or to go to the northern Saga area where there are many temples.
The second way is to visit Okochi Sanso just at the point. This is a mountain villa of a famous film actor of the Showa era.
The third way is to go back a little and enter the north gate of Tenryu-ji. After looking the temple, you can go out from the main gate and you will find yourself on the road in front of Randen station.
As you can see, the bamboo grove is a hub place of sightseeing in Saga and Arashiyama area.
