The main sightseeing spots in Arashiyama

  • Temple / Shrine
  • Special Recommendations

Tenryuji (the head temple of Tenryu branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism) is situated in the busiest area of Arashiyama. This is the top of the five main Rinzai School Zen temples in Kyoto. Takauji ASHIKAGA (1338-1358) who was the first shogun (military dictator) of the Muromachi shogunate (1336 - 1573), turned an imperial villa into this temple in the 14th century in order to pray the happiness of the demised Emperor Godaigo (1318 - 1339) in his next life. The buildings were destroyed by fire several times and reconstructed in the Meiji period (1868 – 1912) and later. In the middle of Hojyo, there is a statue of Sakyamuni, which remained intact from the Fujiwara period.

The garden with a large pond, Sogenchi, was constructed by the first abbot of this temple, Muso Soseki. Even using a pond, he expressed a waterfall by rocks. He also used the style called “shakkei”, borrowed scenery. He borrowed the backward mountain, Arashiyama, as a part of the garden and made it dynamic.

The path at the right hand side of the garden will take you to Tahoden. The wooden statue of the Emperor Godaigo is sitting in this building. Near the building, there is the Spring of Love with Heiwa Kannon and a large ink stone, which was actually used to paint a large dragon on the ceiling of Hatto.

Getting out of Tenryuji, you will find yourself in the middle of the path of the Bamboo Grove. The left path will take you to Torokko Arashiyama station of Sagano Scenic Railway and further Sagano area, where there are many other temples. If you take the right path, you can go back to the main street through the other path of the Bamboo Grove. I recommend you to step into the left path, because you can take better pictures there. Anyway, whichever path you may choose, you can enjoy the characteristic scenery.
