Let’s try making food samples at the heart of Osaka culinary culture!

  • Crafting Experiences

Doguyagai shopping arcade is a famous shopping street popular for chefs as well as tourists. If you are familiar with Kappabashi shopping arcade in Tokyo, this is the Osaka version.

Stores along the street mainly sell what restaurants contain, such as cutleries, various kinds of professional cooking tools, knives, waiters’ uniforms, and menu boards just to name a few.

What attracts tourists the most to this shopping street are the food samples in addition to kitchen tools. Food samples are usually displayed at the entrance of restaurants to show what the food looks like when it’s served. The food samples look incredibly realistic. Food samples have become popular souvenirs as key chains, magnets, and even smart phone cases.

Design Pockets is one of the stores that specialize in food samples on Doguyasuji street. They sell food samples manufactured by their factories. Although some of the processes of the production are automated, food samples actually need a lot of works to be done by skilled workers. They cut, shape and color to create realistic imitations. Now you may be wondering what it is like to make food samples. At Design Pocket, you will have a glimpse of the process of making food samples quick and easy. There are three options to choose. Fruits parfait, sushi, or bento (Japanese lunch box) takes less than an hour. For example, if you pick sushi making, you will first choose 2 out of 6 kinds of sushi: ikura, salmon, tuna, egg, shrimp and eel. First, mix rice with a special glue to make “shari”, sushi rice by using the mold. Next, prepare “neta”, the topped ingredients on shari. Then, place neta on the shari and it’s done. Sounds too simple? Each step includes a little more work so don’t worry! Instructors only speak Japanese but they are super friendly so don’t hold back if you don’t understand Japanese. To join making food samples, you can visit their web page and make a reservation (the link is shown below), or just go directly to the store during opening hours between 10:00 and 5:00 pm. (excluding 12:00 to 1:00 pm for lunchtime)
