The longest shopping street in Japan

  • Walking

Tenjin bashisuji Shotengai is the longest shopping street covered with the roof in Japan. It stretches approximately 2.6km from the north to the south. The street consists of 7 chome (blocks). You will see the Torii signs hanging from the ceiling in different colors in each chome. About SIX hundred shops such as food shops, restaurants, second hand book stores, and drug stores chain stand side by side in the straight shopping street.

I started walking down from the 1 chome of the street because I drop by this shopping street when I visited Osaka Temmangu which is located in the neighborhood. It took about 2.5 hours to walk right through the streets. At the 6 chome, there is Osaka Museum of Housing and Living which is also worth dropping by.

Among lots of shops, Super Tamade, a discount supermarket chain in Osaka is popular among locals. The signboard is surrounded by neon lights, and it seemingly resembles a pachinko parlor. Not only was it opened for 24 hours, but also it has super discounted food items. They sell some items at 1 yen each, such as a packet of instant noodles, and a soft drink! Time sales are ongoing several times a day, too!

Tenjinbashisuji shopping street is indeed a long street, but if you have a chance, I would recommend you to drop by and browse through shops, and you will find some interesting stuff for sure. (This is a great place to browse through shops even if you don't buy anything!)
