The first official Buddhist temple built by Prince Shotoku is so famous for its oldest style of the Inner Precinct

  • Temple / Shrine

Shitennoji is the first official Buddhist temple founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku who was a great supporter of introducing Buddhism into Japan.

During the battle between the Soga clan led by Prince Shotoku and the Mononobe Clan who opposed to the introduction of Buddhism, the prince carved “Shitenno” the four heavenly kings praying for his victory and pledged to build the temple to enshrine them. Then Shitennoji temple was established.

The temple has been destroyed repeatedly by natural disasters and various battles or air raids during the Second World War. But people’s enthusiasm in Buddhism and popularity of the prince enabled its persistent reconstructions.
The layout of the Inner Precinct, Garan, is the oldest style consisting of the five storied pagoda, the main hall and the lecture hall, which are lined up in a straight line.

The plaque on the West Gate says “This is where Buddha preached and this archway is the East Gate of Paradise”.
