The Oldest and Best Thai Restaurant in Dotonbori Osaka

I asked the restaurant staff how long the restaurant has been in Dotonbori and he said it was established in 1994 since there were no other Thai restaurants in Osaka. They have survived more than 20 years in this highly competing restaurants district because they are that good.

The server was knowledgeable enough about their wide variety dishes. Based on his advice, I ordered Oyster and Rice Noodle Omelet with Jasmine Rice. I asked him to make my rice less since it was too much for one person and I didn’t want to waste my food. He happily took my request and served me the half amount of rice and that was perfect for me.

The Oyster Omelet was very good. They oyster was flavorful and the rice noodle was partially crispy. It was a big dish but I finished it all. Unlike the dishes with tons of MSG from other cheap Thai restaurants, I got to taste the fresh ingredients. It was tasty, flavorful and authentic. I asked if I could get some cilantro and they gave me a generous amount on the side. Good service.

They also own a grocery store in the Kuromon Market area and sell fresh vegetables and groceries from Thailand. That must make the whole difference. They have their own route for fresh ingredients directly from Thailand.

I often experience dizziness after eating at Thai restaurants possibly from too much MSG, but I didn’t have any problem at all after eating here. That’s another reason why I recommend this place. I wasn’t expecting much before I went in, but I was asking for their shop card when I was leaving.

The dinner courses are only available for the party of two or more, so you’d better go there with someone to enjoy their course meal. In lunchtime, they serve buffet so it’s a good idea to go there for lunch to taste their various dishes.

Here is the direction. From the Osaka subway Namba station, go up to the Midousuji Street. Go up toward north and turn right on the Dotonbori Street. If you see the big Asahi Super Dry neon sign by the bridge on your left, you are on the right track.

Go straight and when you see the big Gyoza (Japanese Grilled Dumplings) sign on your left, stop there. You will find this Thai restaurant, Krungtep on the left to it and in the basement of a building.

I highly recommend Krungtep. I don’t think I will go to other Thai restaurants again. This place has become my best favorite in Osaka.
