Mysterious hot spring resort with a long history

  • City Walking

Kinosaki hot spring is located in the northern Hyogo prefecture on the coast of the Sea of Japan. It spreads along Otani stream, a tributary of the Maruyama river.

The legend of Kinosaki has it that storks would bathe in the marshes of Kinosaki to heal their wounds. Later, bath houses were built over these very sites to take advantage of the healing waters. And now, Kinosaki is very famous for the seven hot springs of its 1400 year long history, catering to travelers, visitors, and tourists alike throughout Japan.

Called “Sotoyu-meguri”, visiting these seven hot springs is a popular activity. Each of the seven Sotoyu has a unique story, as well as different guardian details; therefor people believe that visiting all seven brings seven different types of luck. I recommend you to stroll through the beautiful, timeless and pedestrian-friendly streets of Kinosaki in yukata (cotton kimono) and geta (wooden sandals).

Onsenji temple, believed to have been built by Dochi-shonin, a holy Buddhist monk, in 738, was built to commemorate the founding the hot spring. You can take the ropeway halfway up the mountain to the main hall of the temple or to the very top to see panoramic views of Kinosaki.

The seasonal events are held nearly every month throughout the year in Kinosaki. Especially, firework displays during the summer months are very fantastic and you can experience a typical Japanese summer tradition.
