Let's start a beautiful morning with walking by the river.

  • Shopping

Miyagawa Morning Market stars in the early morning.
In summer, most shops open from 6 am. In winter, they open from about 7 a.m, although it depends on weather condition. And, they close before noon

Water of the Miyagawa River is very clean and transparent. We can see swimming carp and some other fishes. There are some beautiful bridges crossing the river. Those landscapes show specific atmosphere of Takayama City.

At the entrance of Miyagawa Morning Market, we can see a big title of the market, "Miyagawa Asaichi" and many white strolls continuing along the street on the river side. And also, we can see many shops on the other side. Those shops still open in the afternoon.
Most shops are run by local people. But, the market has some international atmosphere nowadays. Because some foreign tourists are often walking on the street.
We can buy fresh vegetables, flowers, sweets, dried seafood, sweets, deli food, handirafts, daily commodities and souvenirs. Both local people and tourists enjoy shopping. And, it is called the kitchen of Takayama City.

Miyagawa Asaichi is one of the three major morning markets in Japan. Others are Wagima Asaichi in Ishikawa prefecture and Katsuura Asaichi in Chiba prefecture. Compared to Wagima Asaichi, there seems to be not much seafood, although we can see many fresh vegetables and flowers.

They say that Miyagawa Asaichi started near Takayama Betsuin (temple) in 1862. It was the Edo period of Japan. In those days, mulberry leaves for sericulture, vegetables and flowers were sold. After that, it was relocated to Miyagawa Asaichi and Jinya Asaichi. If you are interested in Jinya Asaichi, please visit Jinya Asaichi. Jinya is also a famous sightseeing spot which was a government office of the Edo period (1603-1867).
Takayama City is a compact city. Although there is a route bus for tourists, actually, we can walk to many spots. Around the west exit of Miyagawa Asaichi, there are Kusakabe Heritage House, Old Private Houses and Sakurayama Hachinangu (Shrine). Around the east of Miyagawa Asaichi, there are Fuji Folk Museum and Sanmachi. Most facilities open after 9 a.m. So, it is one of good plans to visit Miyagawa Asaichi first before 9 a.m. And then, we start sightseeing in Takayama City.
