Landmark Zoo of Nagoya

  • Animal Appreciation

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens is an old sightseeing spot in Nagoya. Since Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens opened in 1937, not only people in Aichi prefecture but also people in neighboring prefectures in Chubu region are familiar with this place.

We can go to the zoo, botanical gardens and an amusement park with the same ticket. If we make an extra payment, we can also go to Higashiyama Sky Tower. It is a relatively new spot.
Actually, this place is very large. It is about 60 hectares. And, it is difficult to see everything in one day.

The main feature of this facility is the zoo. There are about 500 kinds of animals. We can see most popular animals like lion, tiger, giraffe, koala, elephant, gorilla and so on.
We can see some ideas to watch animals closely in this zoo. And, there are opportunities that visitors can feed animals. So, if you are interested in, please check the time. And also, there is a spot where we can touch small animals. It is very popular among children.
As for a relatively new spot, the largest facility for elephants called Zoseum opened in 2013. It was created with imaging Sri Lanka where Asian elephants were born. It is 3350 squar meters. We can see elephants walking lively and learn about elephants and Sri Lanka there.

As for botanical gardens, there are flower gardens, Japanese style gardens, Western style gardens and greenhouses. And also, we can see traditional Japanese houses like a samurai house and a Gassho style house like one in Shirakawa-go. And, there is a road for cherry blossoms.
Actually, the botanical garden is very large. So, please relax and stroll there.
As for Higashiyama Sky Tower, if you like an observation deck and have enough time, please visit there. There is a restaurant where we can enjoy lunch or dinner with incredible views.

Zoo and a Nice Botanical Garden

  • Plant Appreciation

Opened in 1937, this zoo is quite old and not modernized, but is still a popular site to visit for kids.

Many of the well-known animals, elephants, giraffes, lions, polar bears, gorillas, koalas, and also 500 other species are here. Most of them are kept in a cage or railed area, but you can touch kangaroos in their area. My children love to go to the ‘Children's Zoo’ where you can touch and feed goats, bunnies, and guinea pigs. The most exciting event will be on Sunday around 2pm, when you can feed giraffe, elephant, sea lions, hippo or bison. (For this, you need to get a reservation ticket in the morning)

The botanical garden may be more attractive for you. There are about 7,000 plants in a 270,000㎡ garden. In this garden, there are also some wetlands, a stream, tea houses, rest lodges, and a Japanese "gasshozukuri" (an architecture method for a house with a steep rafter roof) house replaced from Shirakawago. You may enjoy walking down the garden and feel the freshening breeze, or, just stay and relax somewhere. This botanical garden and zoo is also famous for cherry blossoms in spring, and beautiful autumn leaves.

There is also a big lake where you can get on a swan boat and some amusement parks.

The entry to the whole site together costs only 500 yen, so you can spend an enjoyable day.
