A great view and delicious taste of Shimizu!
The Shimizu port boasts its scenic beauty with a view of Mt. Fuji. The port is both a fishing port and a trade port. It has Japan’s largest catch of tuna and has been an officially designated key international trade port since 1899. Many luxury liners visit the Shimizu port. It is a popular place for passengers of these liners to drop by and enjoy the great view of Mt. Fuji and taste fresh sea food.
Very close to the Shimizu port, there is a shopping center called S-Pulse Dream Plaza with various shops, a cinema, a game center, various restaurants (including several sushi restaurants) and a Ferris wheel. The complex also has a sushi museum and a museum dedicated to Chibi Marukochan, a well-known children cartoon character from Shimizu. At the sushi museum visitors can learn about the history of sushi as well as the many kinds of sushi. After the museum, you may want to try some sushi in S-Pulse Dream Plaza or at a fish market called Kashi-no-Ichi nearby. (http://www.dream-plaza.co.jp/about/en/)
From the port, some cruise ships are available.
・Bay Cruise is a popular 45 minute round cruise from and to Hinode pier.
・Suruga bay ferry traveling across the Suruga bay to Toi, on the western shore of Izu peninsula is also a nice ride. It takes 65 minutes to Toi in Izu which is famous for its hot spring resort. (http://www.dream-ferry.co.jp/suruga/)
An outstanding scenery of Mt. Fuji can be enjoyed from the boat when the weather is fine.
Recommendable Shizuoka tour
There are some other places you can enjoy before or after visiting the Shimizu port.
Magnificent view of Mt Fuji if the weather is fine.
2. Kunozan Toshogu shrine
A five minute cable car ride from Nihondaira takes you to Kunozan Toshogu shrine. The great shogun (military dictator) Ieyasu TOKUGAWA (late 16th century to the beginning of 17th century) was enshrined there. It is a good visit to find out the trace of the historically important figure who united the nation and built the foundation of Japan.
3. Strawberry picking experience (From January to the beginning of May)
You’ll see greenhouses stretching out 7 km on the hill side along the coast. Mt. Kuno is the birthplace of strawberry picking for sightseeing. Once you try the taste, you cannot stop eating them!
4. Miho Pine Grove
From Nihondaira, Miho Pine Grove can be seen. The place is one of the sites of Mt Fuji UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. It is also a great photo spot for a great view of Mt. Fuji, pine trees and ocean when the weather is fine.
