  • Special Recommendations

Mt Fuji is more than magnificent with its breathtaking views and amazing climbing trails. It is an integral part of craftsmanship, agriculture and fishing in our prefecture. Let me introduce you to the food that comes from around the mountain and the products that show the importance of this symbolic mountain in our culture.

Mt. Fuji (3,776 meters) is the highest mountain in Japan. For a long time, this symbol of Japan has been an object of worship. It has been featured in many works of art and literature not only because of its height but also because of its graceful and magnificent appearance. Mt. Fuji was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 2013.

In recent years it has been reported that more than 300,000 people climb Mt. Fuji every year, of which approximately 30% are from overseas. There are four official routes to the summit of Mt. Fuji. The biggest one is the Yoshida route on the Yamanashi prefecture side. The others, Fujinimoya, Gotemba and Subashiri, are located on the Shizuoka prefecture side. Preparation is important before climbing. Every year many people lose their way on the mountain and end up in a place where they were not planning to go. Some people climb up to the summit and enjoy walking around the trail of crater rim, but take a different route down to an unexpected place without realizing it. Maps and other information for climbers are available at the Mt Fuji Tourist & Communication Bureau (at Shin-Fuji station) and the Gotemba City Tourist Association (close to Gotemba station). The map shows each trail with a different color.

☆ Climbing season: July to mid-September (depending on the route)
Some hiking courses are available from May through mid-November
☆ The climbing fee is collected on a voluntary basis (1,000 yen)
