Discovering great ukiyoe paintings

  • Arts

This art museum opened in Yui, Shizuoka city in 1994. This is the first art museum in Japan which was named after Hiroshige UTAGAWA (1797-1858) who lived during the Edo period (1603-1868). Do you know this artist? He is one of the greatest masters of Ukiyoe that gave much influence to French impressionists such as Van Gogh and Claude Monet. It is said that he joined an official procession to Kyoto in 1832, sketching landscapes along the Tokaido highway. Based on those sketches, he created his most well known series, "The Fifty-three Stations of Tokaido". This museum possesses this series and also the "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo", which is considered to be the masterpiece of his late years. The collection counts about 1400, focusing mainly on his representative landscapes.

The Tokaido Hiroshige Museum of Art has an ukiyoe guidance room to deepen your understanding of the Edo culture. Also, in the entrance hall, there is a corner where you can experience printing ukiyoe on a sheet of paper and take it home with you. The exhibition changes monthly. Please take a look at the museum's website ( to know more.

After you appreciate every bit of his work, how about a cup of green tea in the tea ceremony house next to the museum? It has been restored as a memorial hall in the style of the architecture back in the Edo period. Since Yui was one of the post towns of the Tokaido highway, there used to be an officially approved inn called "honjin" that feudal lords could use and 32 inns for the general public. Actually the tea house of the museum used to be a detached building from the "honjin", where the Emperor Meiji is known to have taken a rest. I recommend strolling around this nostalgic town and visiting Kanbara and the Satta pass, which became important motifs in his works.

If you get hungry, please taste the fresh seafood caught in Suruga bay. My strongest recommendation is to try the sakura-shrimp and baby sardines with the very tasty local sake, Shousetsu (
This tour will surely satisfy not only your artistic interest but also your stomach!
