Learn Mt Fuji's history and culture of pilgrimage

  • Arts

Since ancient time, people have been impressed by the beauty of Mt. Fuji, frightened of its fierce eruptions and worshiped the mountain believing that gods reside there. The worship of Mt. Fuji has been an essential part of the culture of people not only living on the foothill of Mt. Fuji but also in different parts of the country. Once volcanic eruptions subsided in the modern centuries, many people made pilgrimages to Mt. Fuji.

Fujisan museum introduces this religious aspect of Mt. Fuji as well as the local history and industry. It was renewed in April 2015. Using both conventional methods and modern technology, it shows history of climbing, pilgrimage to Mt. Fuji, legends, religious festivals and much more. The main feature of the museum is a projection mapping on a 1/2000 scale model of Mt. Fuji that displays seasons of the mountain and other topics. The museum also exhibits some art works and has a Mt. Fuji viewing terrace. Explanations are mainly in Japanese but English voice guidance is available at the ticket counter. The videos have English subtitles.

The museum opens from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, entry before 4:30 pm. It is closed on Tuesday. The entrance fee is 400 yen. You can get here by bus bound for Lake Yamanaka or Gotenba from Fujisan station.
