Ropeway Trip on Mt. Fuji

  • Views

There are many Mt. Fuji view spots in the Fuji Five Lakes area, and the Tenjosan park is one of the best locations to see a wonderful panoramic view of the mountain. A ropeway carries us to the park from lake Kawaguchiko, the second largest lake among the five lakes.

“Kachikachi-yama,” the name of the ropeway, is also a title of a famous Japanese folk tale. It’s a little bit creepy story that a rabbit avenges on a raccoon dog for an old man, whose wife was deceived and killed by the raccoon dog. From the ropeway, you can see a slope that goes down where the raccoon dog is said to have run down with burning firewood on its back. In the story, lake Kawaguchiko is the lake where the raccoon dog was nearly drowned on a mud boat tricked by the rabbit.

The Tenjosan park is at the final station of the ropeway. You can ring a bell, named the Heavenly Bell, for your happiness with the backdrop of Mt. Fuji and make a wish at Rabbit Shrine, unique for its two rabbit statues instead of lion-dogs, ordinary guardians for Japanese shrines. People wish to become wiser and good walkers by stroking these rabbits. You could also enjoy special dumplings with coffee, watching the superb view of Mt. Fuji from the park.

If the weather is fine, walking down the hiking trail is also enjoyable. You can see the beauty of hydrangea flowers in the summer and colored leaves in autumn in your 45 minutes descending trek.

Gondolas of the ropeway were redesigned in 2015, for the theme of “Basket-palanquin to Mt. Fuji" with wider windows to provide spectacular Mt. Fuji views.

Three-minute ride to a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji

  • Views

Mt. Kachi Kachi cable car connects the shore of lake Kawaguchi located 856 meters above the sea level and Fujimidai, or Mt. Fuji viewing station at 1,075 meters in three minutes. From the viewing station, you have a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji, the lake, the town and the Southern Japanese Alps on clear days. Mt. Kachi Kachi, also known as Mt. Tenjo, is a locale of Japanese folktale about a raccoon dog and a rabbit. You will find statues of the raccoon dog and the rabbit here and there depicting the story. It is about 10 minutes’ hike to the top of Mt. Kachi Kachi from Fujimidai station but there is no view from the peak.

You can also hike up to Fujimidai station instead of taking the ropeway. It is about 40-50 minutes’ short but nice hike from the shore of lake Kawaguchi especially in July for hydrangeas. There is a memorial statue of famous Japanese writer, Osamu Dazai, who wrote a story based on the folktale of Mt. Kachi Kachi, at the rest point of the trail. For hiking-lovers, the trail continues to the top of Mt. Mittsutoge. Another 3 hours hike to the peak.

Mt. Kachi Kachi cable car is located about 15 minutes’ walk from Kawaguchiko station. The sightseeing bus called retro bus also takes you there.
