Let’s meet lovely animals at Cactus park!
Izu Cactus Park was opened in 1959. Because of its name, it is often assumed that it is a botanical garden with cactuses only. In fact, Izu Cactus Park was designed for different animals and different plants as a part of the main park.
The pyramid-shaped greenhouse is a symbol of this park. It exhibits various cactuses brought from across the world. Among them, large ball cactuses called “the king of cactus” attracts your attention. Many of them are over 100 years old. The largest and oldest one is said to be 160 years old! At the souvenir shop, you can choose your favorite cactuses and plant them together in one pot.
Animals here are very popular and I think the most popular one is the capybara. They started to attract attention after the park began to let them enjoy bathing in hot spring water in winter. They look like they are having the best time! I believe that they have the power to make many people happy. When the bathing season starts at the end of November every year, the capybaras are featured on local TV saying that this show is the beginning of winter season. Their bathing starts at 10:30 am, you’ll see a crowd of people around the area so you may want to get there early.
Another must-see event is “Presentation & Recital by the animals of Izu Cactus Park”. The animals appearing on the stage are dogs, monkeys, birds and many other cute animals.
Other various events are also fun, like feeding animals for example. Visitors of all ages can enjoy a full day in this park.

It is now beautifully covered with green grass and attracts many visitors. A chairlift service is available to get to the top. Izu Granpal Park
Izu Cactus Park is one facility of Izu Shaboten Park Group, consisting of 5 facilities in the center of Izu Highland along the east coast of Izu peninsula. Let me introduce another one, Izu Granpal Park. It is a leisure park having a spacious area with green grasses, facilities for athletics and sports activities such as a miniature golf course, a cycling square, jungle and obstacle courses for kids to enjoy getting through. Visiting both Izu Cactus Park and Izu Granpal Park is a good plan for families with children. The two parks are located about 10 minutes away by car.
