Highland resort with a panoramic view of Mt. Fuji

  • Views

Lake Yamanaka is the largest lake of the five lakes of Mt. Fuji. It has a shape of a whale if you look at it from above. The altitude of the surface of the lake is at 980m above sea level, making it the 3rd highest lake in Japan. Because of its cool summer and relatively close location to metropolitan area, it attracts millions of tourists every year especially in the summer.

The view of Mt. Fuji from the lake is dynamic and has a distinctive shape. From mid-October to February, Diamond Fuji, a sunset to the peak of Mt. Fuji can be seen from the lake. Though it is cold, winter is actually a good season to see Mt. Fuji as the weather condition is more stable and the mountain is covered with snow.

The good view-points accessible by bus are Nagaike Shinsui park alongside the lake and Hana-no-Miyako park, a flower park that offers panoramic view of Mt. Fuji with seasonal flowers such as sunflowers, tulips or cosmoses. If you have a car, driving up to Panoramadai lookout is highly recommended. A boat trip is an option to have a good view and it is available in a big swan-shaped sightseeing boat. One ride is for about 25 minutes and costs 900 yen. Another attraction is Yamanakako-no-Kaba, an amphibian bus which can go on both land and water. Hiking in small mountains around the lake is a good option too. After a tiring day, there is a hot spring bath to relax. Benifuji-no-yu has outdoor baths with a view of Mt. Fuji.

To get around the area, there is a sightseeing bus called Fujikko Go from Fujisan station, which stops at tourist spots. The number of buses is limited, so check the timetable before you go. Rental cycle is available in different shops alongside the lake. A bicycle path is installed in most parts of the lakeside but you still have to share the road with cars to complete the circuit.
