Finely Designed Kimono in Michelin 3- Star Museum

  • Arts

In the 1930s when he was 20 years old, Ichiku KUBOTA was fascinated by the Tsujigahara-dyeing, a popular method to dye clothes used more than five hundred years ago in Japan. He studied the method and created an original technique called "Ichiku Tsujigahara", which made him a renowned artist worldwide.

This museum was built when he was 76 years old next to lake Kawaguchiko. Entering into the premise through an oriental style gate, there is a garden with a waterfall. Walking through the garden, which leads us to an annex of the museum, is like strolling in a small forest. Ichiku revered Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi, so you can clearly see his taste on the design of the building. In the annex, there is an exhibition room of glass beads he collected in Europe, Africa and other parts of the world.

The pyramid-shaped building is the museum sustained by 16 pillars of 1,000-year-old hiba, Japan’s indigenous cypress. You can see the rustic beauty of the structure from inside, where many kimono collections he designed are exhibited. Ichiku wanted to express the rich and natural beauty using his own dyeing techniques. The sea, four seasons in nature, the cosmos, and Mt. Fuji are designed on the kimonos.

At the museum shop, there are original items you can get only here: scarves, accessories using glass beads etc.
