Emperor's residence with one of the MUST-SEE Japanese gardens in Tokyo

  • Castle

Originally there was a Shogun's castle called Edo castle until the 19th century. That's why you can see marvelous stonewalls and towers here which remind us of samurai feudalism.

Located in very central Tokyo, Chiyoda-ward, the location includes
1. The present emperor, Akihito and his wife, Empress Michiko's living place
2. A ceremonial palace where the emperor greets people
3. A Japanese garden with a pond, seasonal flowers and pine trees

This garden is called 'Imperial Palace East Garden' because of its location.
I highly recommend you visit this circuit style garden because you can enjoy pretty flowers in each season!
Spring --- cherry blossoms and then wisterias.
Early summer --- irises and hydrangeas.
Autumn --- Japanese pampas grasses and red spider lilies.
Winter --- camellias and narcissuses and so on.

There are beautifully pruned pine trees which look like big Bonsai trees! It's worth seeing them as well.
The garden is closed every Monday and Friday.

To see the emperor and empress, we have two days in a year, the emperor's birthday (December 23rd) and January 2nd. On these days, the main gate is open to the public and we are allowed to stay in front of Kyuden palace.
