Exquisite museum with a beautiful garden

  • Arts

Nezu Bijutsukan is a private museum founded by Mr. Nezu who was the ex-president of the Tobu Railway Company. He made his private residence the museum to preserve and present his collections to the public, and it opened in 1940. His collection holds more than 7,400 pieces of calligraphy, sculptures, ceramics, paintings and other artifacts, which were collected from Japan and East Asia, including several national treasures and important cultural properties. One of the masterpieces of his collection is said to be the folding screens of Iris by Korin OGATA. Mr. Nezu was also quite interested in the Japanese tea ceremony, and especially his collection of tea utensils is wonderful, he even made several tea houses in his garden as well.

The museum was once closed due to renovation for 3 years, and the current building was designed by Kengo KUMA who designed the new Kabuki theater in Ginza. The design was made to harmonize the modern aspects and Japanese tradition, especially by using bamboo effectively.

The temporarily exhibition changes about 7 times a year, so whenever you visit, you'll enjoy it.

There is a cafe next to the garden, where you'll forget the hustle and bustle, although you're still in the middle of Tokyo.

Opening hours: 10:00-17:00 (Last entry slot: 16:30) / Closed: Mondays (if a national holiday falls on Monday, it's closed the next day), New Year's holidays, and during exhibition installations. (Please check in advance)
Price: Permanent exhibition ¥1,000 (JPY / Adult), ¥800 (JPY / High school student or above)
Temporarily exhibition ¥1,200 (JPY / Adult), ¥1,000 (JPY / High school student or above)
