Free magnificent view from a 200m observation spot

  • City Walking

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office Building is located in the area of Shinjuku skyscrapers. It was constructed in 1991 and designed by the famous architect Kenzo TANGE.

It has two observation floors, North and South. You can go up to these floors 202m above the ground only in 55 seconds by the elevators. It opens from 9:30 to 23:00. The good news for you is that the admission is free of charge!

From the observation floor, you will see the skyscrapers such as Park Hyatt Hotel (“Lost in Translation” was filmed there), the unique Cocoon Building and sharp NTT Docomo Building. Also, you will see Tokyo Sky Tree (634m), Tokyo Tower (333m), and even Mount Fuji (3776m) when the air is clear. You may be surprised to find a lot of green areas in the middle of very populated Tokyo. These are the land of Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi Park, Shinjuku-Gyoen Park, etc.

You can buy souvenirs on the observation floor related to this Tokyo Met Building and traditional crafts. If you go up to the North observation, there is a toy shop called Hakuhinkan. You will find many items there.

On the first floor, there is the Tokyo Tourist Information Center and on the second floor, there is the Japanese Prefectural Tourism Promotion Corner. You can get a lot of information and brochures after your visit to the observation floor.
