Genuine Sanuki UDON you can have in Tokyo

UDON is a famous specialty of Shikoku area of Japan - especially the area known as Sanuki, but you can have pretty good ones in Tokyo as well.

I have never been to Shikoku and had UDON there, so I'm not sure if it's close or not, but it's still good.

In Japan, it's said that UDON should have enough KOSHI -somewhat rubbery texture-.
It's not hard or chewy, but nicely "rubbery".

There are some UDON chain shops in Tokyo which are originally from Shikoku area, and here is that one I think is the best.

I went to the one in Kinshicho.
It's located in the Orinas mall.

Their UDON is made of just flour -grown in Japan-, water and salt.
The UDON is nicely "rubbery" and their soup and Tempura are also very tasty.

Once you get to the store, you are supposed to get a tray and order the UDON type.
You have some choices, simple ones, UDON with egg, UDON with Japanese yam, UDON with Shoyu, and so on.
The UDON cook will hand you your bowl of UDON right there.

Then, you can choose your Tempura by yourself.
There are mixed vegetable Tempura, chicken Tempura, fish cake Tempura, pumpkin Tempura, and so on.

At last, they will check out your tray and you can add some green onion or pepper.
And you are ready to eat.

I ordered Bukkake UDON and pumpkin and lotus root Tempuras, 500yen, Bukkake UDON for 290yen and pumpkin Tempura for 100yen and lotus root Tempura for 110yen.

If it's your first time to try Japanese UDON, I think you should try Bukkake first.
Bukkake is simply boiled UDON with soup and it makes the KOSHI stand out the most.
You can also choose hot or cold for Bukkake.

Their Kinshicho shop is located in a shopping mall and there are many tables, so you can go even with a big group.

There also is a designated area only for the ones with kids.
The mall and the eating place gets crowded around lunch time on weekends, so you should probably try there in the morning or sometime in the afternoon.
UDON for breakfast is my favorite style.

By the way, it's very interesting that MARUKAME SEIMEN shop at Waikiki, Hawaii, is the best selling shop of all their over-700 shops in Japan.

To taste good Sanuki UDON, you don't have to go over to Shikoku!

This is a restaurant chain that has 65 restaurants in Tokyo and 778 restaurants in Japan.
