Make yourself at home in the garden of God

  • Views

Sou-unn-kyou is one of the most symbolic mountainous area in the Taisetsu National Park. It takes about two hours by car but the isolated atmosphere of the area is worth driving for so long if you want to relax in the heart of Hokkaido's nature.

The original name of Sou-unn-kyou comes from the Ainu word "Kamui-Mintara". It means “The garden where the Gods enjoy playing”. As an aborigine tribe of Hokkaido, Ainu people have very special sense toward the nature around them and I would recommend you one way to help you feel similarly---take the Kurodake cable car.

Mt. Kurodake is a mountain with a height of 1,984 meters. It seems too high for hiking, however, after using the cable car and lift (total fee for both ride for 2 ways is 2,550 JPY for adult) it would only take you on foot about 1-2 hours. Even if you don't like climbing, you will have good chances to meet lovely animals near the cable car station---chipmunks! (but never feed them!)

Besides the mountain, Sou-unn-kyou is also one of the top-level hot-spring area of Hokkaido, and particularly, at the beginning of Fall, all leaves change to red and yellow and this place is often considered one of the best ones in Japan to enjoy the change of colors. So if you have the chance, please do not miss it.
