Pottery village in the middle of the nature

  • Traditional Entertainment
  • Special Recommendations

This is the biggest pottery village in Okinawa, where 16 about kilns including climbing kilns are located. Pottery artists in Tsuboya pottery area moved to this area in Yomitan Village around 1981 because the surrounding of Tsuboya area was getting more populated as the capital of Okinawa. So, that is how this pottery village in the nature started. Thanks to the countryside environment, pottery artists can use firewood in kilns even at present time.

You will find both classical-styled works and new designs or ones with colors that were not used before. That is because the masters in the pottery village have educated young ones, who brought a breath of fresh air to the traditional designs. The established artists gather around Yomitanzan Kiln and young ones around North Kiln.

It is recommended to take time to visit each place in the pottery village to find your favorite cups, plates, or a pair of lion-dogs because different artists have different styles. If you don’t have much time, you can just go to two cooperative stores. There are two café where you can enjoy local meals or refreshments served with potteries made in the area. My favorite place is Utsuwa-ya, located near the entrance area for their earthy and traditional styles mixed with some modern senses and colors.

There’re 40 more kilns outside of this pottery village throughout Yomitan Village as well. The varieties and prices attract not only tourists but locals as well.
