Traditional entertainment district in Kyoto

  • City Walking

If you are on Shijo street, I recommend you to go eastward and take some photos on the stone steps of the Ysasaka shrine. You can also take a look at the Gion area from there. It is an area centered on the crossing of Shijo street and Hanamikoji street.

The area is divided roughly into two areas by Shijo street.

The northern part is a new area with bars and other drinking places. This is a town of alcohol and welcoming hostesses. Basically, this northern part is a new area, but the symbol of Gion area is in this area. One small river, Shirakawa, runs from east to west through this area and some bridges cross over this river. One stone bridge of them is very famous and often taken by photos or videos. This small stone bridge is the symbol of the Gion area. There are many cherry trees and maple trees along this river and they are very beautiful in the seasons.

The southern part is an old traditional area. There are many traditional style buildings along Hanamikoji street. Among them there are many Ochayas where you can spend time with Geikos and Maikos. But in order to do so, you need an introduction of one of the customers of an Ochaya and a lot of money!

If you want to enjoy the Japanese traditional atmosphere, I recommend you to take Hanamikoji street southward from the Shijo street down to the gate of Kennin-ji, one of the five main Rinzai School Zen temples in Kyoto. You may see one or two Maikos or Geikos on the street if you are lucky.

Anyway, the Gion area is a very vivid entertainment district as a whole.
