Let’s walk around the huge replica of the ancient royal palace and get to know the history of Osaka!

  • Arts

Located conveniently in the neighborhood of Osaka Castle, Osaka Museum of History offers you to experience the more-than-2000 year history of Osaka in entertaining way.

The museum occupies four floors, which are from the 7th to the 10th floors, and each floor features the different time period of Osaka. It will take less than 2 hours to go through, so it would be good to drop by quick after your visit to the Osaka Castle.

Visitors should start out from the 10th floor, which shows the ancient period of Osaka. It is quite interesting to walk around the huge replica of the Daigokuden (the central building of an ancient royal palace), originally constructed as an Audience Hall in Nara Period in 744. It is also worth checking the oldest wooden tablet with the ink inscription of Kana letters.

Proceeding to the 9th floor, you can see the town from medieval period to Edo period from the 16th century. Osaka was known as the center of commerce, as rice paddies which had been harvested all over Japan were sent to Osaka for bidding. You would see the displays which explain how rice paddies were sold to merchants. Moreover, performing arts such as Bunraku was a popular entertainment at that time, so you should look at the Bunraku puppets.

The 7th and 8th floors show what the life was like in modern times in the late 19th century. Walking through the street with dioramas of a public market, you can have a glimpse of the vibrant Osakan culture.

Most displays are shown only in Japanese, yet come with a lot of audio visual aids such as dioramas and pictures, which would just be enough for anyone to have a brief picture of Osakan history.

Osaka Museum of History: Open from 9:30 pm to 5:00 pm, 500 yen per adult,
leaflets available in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese.
