Enjoyed the great harmony of nature and urban complex

Grand Front Osaka was opened on the north side of Osaka city center in April, 2013. It consists of 4 main tower buildings which include as many as 266 retail shops of fashion, accessories, books, cafes and restaurants. In addition to shops, there are company offices and the Intercontinental Osaka Hotel.

There had been a huge cargos station in the vast 24 hectares. When it's gone, people were very curious about what it would become as the area was possibly Japan's last undeveloped city properties. Grand Front Osaka occupies about 7 hectares. Osaka has been known as the "water city", as it has been developed along waterways which contributed the development of Osaka's commerce. Grand Front Osaka made use of its history and nature. The whole area is well incorporated with Osaka's geographic features and nature with urban atmosphere.

The Umekita Plaza is an open space within the proximity of the north gate of JR Osaka Station. Surrounded by gingko trees, flowers and water streams, you can see a lot of people hanging out. There is KIRIN Brewery Company's "Brewer's Spirit" bar during summer time. Across the plaza, you will see the ship-shaped building, GARB MONAQUE café / bar. It is open late.

It's a nice place for shopping, meeting up with friends for lunch or tea, enjoying garment dinner on restaurant floor. That's what I do. So, this time, I joined the walking tour for change. It is an hour long tour and the guide will show you around the area with detailed explanation. Overall, it was really interesting to know how the buildings were designed. I wouldn't have known that where Grand Front is built was a cargos station, and they used pieces of wooden railroad ladders for interior decoration of the ceiling. If you are looking for something more than a shopping experience, it would be fun. (Guide tour is currently available only in Japanese. Preferably go with Japanese speaking friends. If you are an international students or have some experience in Japanese, give it a try!)
