Kitashinchi Curry

Both curry and ramen were originally foreign foods to Japan - foods that were brought in from the outside, then changed significantly to match the Japanese palate. So it makes perfect sense to combine them, which is what curry ramen shop Shunsaido has done.

Shunsaido is located in Kitashinchi, a bar district just south of Umeda. Kitashinchi is full of small and large bars that run from cheap to upscale, and every once in a while you can find a humble ramen shop tucked away in a corner like Shunsaido. Shunsaido is closed on weekends, but open past midnight on weekdays, so it’s the right place to go if you find yourself drinking in Kitashinchi after work or while traveling. There is a branch in Higobashi too, which is open on Saturdays for those craving curry ramen on the weekend.

When you go to Shunsaido, you get the curry ramen. The only real choice you make is which version you get, and what toppings you add. The pork is the standard, but they also have beef, seafood, plum, and pork kimchi, running from ¥800-¥900. Toppings include egg, onions, cheese, and spicy paste, and all go for ¥100 or less.

Shunsaido’s curry broth is a solid Japanese-style vegetable curry, thinned down just enough to be drank. The noodles are curly and yellow, and along with the curry soup, they pull with them green onions and bits of pork. As can be found in many dedicated curry restaurants, there are rakkyo or Chinese onions on the side to freshen your palate between sips.
