The Legendary Rikuro’s Cheesecake Café in Namba Osaka
There are three reasons why you should try Riku Café in the middle of Namba: their cheesecake is the best, they serve good coffee and their service is good.
You will spot this legendary cheesecake shop easily in the arcade because there is a long line in the front for take outs. Rikuro’s cheesecake is so good that I would wait in the line too. They keep baking the cheesecake on the premises so the line moves pretty quickly and it’s worth the wait. On the second floor, there is a café called Riku Café where you can enjoy their freshly baked cheesecake out of the oven while it’s still warm.
Rikuro’s cheesecake is not the thick dense kind like NY cheesecake, but it’s more like a soufflé. It is fluffy, soft, savory, not-too-sweet and simply delicious. It was still warm as I ate off the plate. The flavor is more of the fresh eggs than the strong cheese. It’s so good that I wanted to eat one more after finishing one piece.
I didn’t expect much on their drinks, but it turned out that they serve very good coffee. The coffee came in a Royal Copenhagen cup too, very classy. They have only one choice of coffee; hand dripped house blend. However, as I asked if they could make it American, they kindly offered bringing a hot water on the side so that I can weaken the coffee to fit my taste. That was perfect and the coffee was so good! I had one slice of cheesecake and hot coffee, 918 JPY including tax. Their cheesecake is so cheap that the whole cake for the take out is only 675 JPY. No wonder why it’s so popular
The serving staff were all young, but their service was professional. They were attentive enough to take the empty plates away from my table, and were always nice and smiley. It counts as a large part of experience, so friendly service is very important. Also, they have simple version of English menu available for the foreign customers. Very nice hospitality!
They have waiting chairs inside facing the cake showcase near the entrance. So you get to enjoy looking at the various cakes while waiting. Even though there is a line, the waiting people are not looking toward the dining area, so it seems everyone was taking their time. Plus, the servers told me to take my time, so it was a pleasant experience even though it looks hectic with all the lines outside.
In the back of the menu, shows a memory of Rikuro who is the founder. He always invited his friends to his home and serve cheesecake that he baked at home. He was all about hospitality. He passed away in 2007, but I guess his spirit is still alive. I highly recommend this place, and I will definitely go back again.
