Learn about an often forgotten powerful earthquake
The Hanshin Awaji Great Earthquake had an undeniable impact on all Japan.
Kobe Disaster Memorial Park is located in one of the Kobe’s most iconic areas, so I recommend you take a bit of time and see what happened there 20 years ago.
Kobe Disaster Memorial Park is on the East side of Meriken Park. When the earthquake happened in 1995, the port of Kobe was severely damaged. Later they preserved a part of the site to show how it was damaged. The panels and audio guidance (both in English and Japanese) also explain the details. Because they are outdoor monuments, they are open when Meriken Park opens.
This is an outdoor monument site where the damaged pier is preserved. There is another museum where you can learn more about the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. You can see displays as you walk through the diorama which shows what the street was like after the earthquake struck. The name of the museum is a bit long in English－ “The Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake Memorial Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution”. It is located in the HAT Kobe district in Nada. It’s about a 10 minute walk from JR Nada station.
The place where you realize the menace of nature
Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park in the park commemorates the many victims who were killed during the Great Hanshin Earthquake on January 17, 1995.
A short section of damaged waterfront has been left altered as a reminder of the earthquake's tremendous destructive power. It is intended to convey a message to the world regarding the devastation of the earthquake and the city’s subsequent restoration.
When you enter this area, at first, you can see a round monument written the concept of this memorial park in Japanese and English on the wall. There are also some panels with pictures taken the process from the conditions of the day the earthquake struck to the subsequent restoration including the timetable. And some video monitors recorded the restoration process are embedded in the pillars.
If you see the pier adjacent to the memorial park, you may be shocked by the preserved damaged quay to leave it untouched. This damaged quay is equipped the passageway to spread all over, so you can check this “archaeology” from different angles. We say that this archaeology is the witness who tells of the power of the earthquake for the future.
You can not only learn about the extremely distressing incidents of the earthquake but also the history of this quay after the opening Kobe Port there.
