- Travelko Rating
Osu shopping district is close to downtown Sakae, about 15 mins walk from Sakae or 1 or 2 stations away from Sakae station or Fushimi station. It’s like Akihabara in Tokyo with the electrical appliance stores and a powerful “otaku” culture (meaning nerd in Japanese), or Harajuku with the fancy stores for young people or Koenji with many secondhand clothing stores. There are also a variety of international cuisine and old shopping streets, so this district is mixed up and condensed with traditional culture, youth culture, otaku culture with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. For its uniqueness and entertainment, Osu shopping district is always very appreciated by all.
The town Osu developed as a temple town or an entertainment quarter since Osu Kannon Temple was relocated here 400 years ago. So first of all, let’s visit Osu Kannon Temple for a bit. On the 18th and the 28th of every month, many weird items are sold in an antique market in front of the temple, and this is very popular too. There are also other temples and shrines scattered throughout the town that you can visit.
Next, let’s enjoy shopping in the 9 shopping arcades. There are a lot of cheap stores that specialize in fashion, secondhand clothing, electronic equipment, cosplay, anime and hobby goods. A 100 yen store near the Osu Kannon Temple is popular, too.
In addition, don’t miss to eat some good food! Famous ones are, “karaage” (fried chicken), “taiyaki” (a fish shaped sweet), “mitarashi dango” (rice dumplings with salty sweet sauce), or a pizza which won the 1st place of the world Napoli pizza competition. I would recommend the famous local specialties, misokatsu or curry udon, too.
There are some big festivals you may choose to join, such as Otsu Kannon Temple Setsubun Festival in February, World Cosplay Summit in July, Osu Summer Festival in August, or Osu Daidochonin Festival with a traditional courtesan parade in October.

The Osu district is a popular area for Nagoya citizens. There are several shopping avenues around Osu Kannon temple and Bansho temple, people can enjoy a wide variety of antique stores, secondhand clothing and computer stores and restaurants. Osu is always crowded with both young and old people. Many events are held in the shopping district, such as the Summer festival, the Parade for the "World Cosplay Summit", and the Street Performers Festival, which are especially popular with the younger generations.
Osu Kannon was originally built in 1333 in the city of Hashima in the Gifu prefecture. The construction was sponsored by the Emperor Go-Daigo but because of repeated floods, the temple was moved to its present location in 1612 by Ieyasu TOKUGAWA. Unfortunately the air raids on Nagoya in World War Ⅱ in 1945 destroyed the temple and it was rebuilt in the 1970s.

4. My recommendations
Osu Kannon temple is important for Nagoya citizens not only New Year Festival but also Obon Summer festival. I often came to pray during my childhood. And Osu shopping district is very fun for everyone, for children and adults. This place is a must for computer lovers. There are many computer shops, parts shops and secondhand shops that we can enjoy shopping and finding anything rare.
5. Best visit time
Always exiting but especially interesting at the time of Summer festival, the parade for the "World Cosplay Summit", and the Street Performers Festival. We can enjoy also cherry blossoms from the end of March to the beginning of April.
Bansho Temple was established as the family temple of the Oda clan by Nobuhide ODA, the father of Nobunaga ODA. There is a famous story about Nobunaga. His father died young, at 42 years old, and the funeral was held here in the Bansho temple. During the funeral, the chief mourner, who is the eldest son, was Nobunaga. He came late, he wore very strange clothes, inappropriate for a funeral. Suddenly he threw the incense for his father's memorial tablet in the public. This story teaches us that Nobunaga is extraordinary, some people said he is stupid but some people said he is a real genius.
