Main streets of Old Town in Takayama
If we want to feel an old street atmosphere, we should visit Sanmachi-dori.
Sanmachi is registered as an important preservation district of historic buildings.
And, you can enjoy shopping and eating here. There are many cafes and restaurants in the original historic buildings. And, we can enjoy Japanese food like soba, zenzai, odango, senbei, and sushi.
And also, there are sake breweries, soy-sauce shops, miso shops, handicraft shops, Japanese miscellaneous good shops and souvenir shops. In a holiday, Sanmachi-dori seems to be full of life these days.
Hida beef sushi might be cuisine we can eat in only this region. If you like sushi, you should try it. Even though you are not good at row fish so much, you can eat Hida beef sushi. It is because, if you ask, the beef will be baked well done.
Actually, there are many sake breweries in Sanmachi. And, we can see a big ball called Sugitama in front of those sake breweries. The scenery is specific to Takayama. If a sake brewery show a Sugitama, it is a sign to start creating sake. At first, the Sugtiama is green. And, it turns from green to brown gradually. We can see how sake mature through the color of Sugitama.
In winter, tours to see some breweries take place. And, we can see the inside which we can not see usually. And, we can taste a cup of sake.
There are some sake breweries where we can taste, if we pay a few hundred yen except winter. We can also taste a cup of miso soup in a miso shop.
There is Hida Folk Archaeological museum, Fuji Folk Museum and Hirata Folk Art Museum in Sanmachi, although they are not so big. If you are interested in folk art and life, please try to see them. And, there is Takayama Museum of History and Art. It is a big museum and free admission. It takes about a few minutes from Sanmachi. It is one of must-see places of Takayama. And, you can also take a rest there.
In the daytime, there are a lot of people in Sanmachi these days. So, if we visit Sanmachi in the early morning or in the evening, there are not many people. We can feel some different mood of Sanmachi. And, it is also very nice.
Exciting Old Town with Many Interesting Shops
Sanmachi is the area around the major three streets that make Hidatakayama famous. It is a must see place in Takayama.
Since more than 300 years ago, it has been a flourishing merchant town that established around the Takayama castle, shrines and temples. The local feudal lord during the Edo period (1603-1868) instructed to build the town like Kyoto, so the town is also known as “Little Kyoto”. Since the town fortunately wasn’t bombed during the world wars, it’s well preserved and was designated as a Nationally Recognized Important Historical Building Preservation Area.
Along the streets, there are unique wooden architectures with low gate roofs and fine patterned latticed windows. Many buildings are still used as sake warehouses, cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. Have fun shopping for souvenirs, tasting sake, trying some local dishes, and visiting a number of small museums. You can spend more than 2 or 3 hours here experiencing these activities.
I love tasting each brewery’s sake especially. There are many unique and tasty sake, because brewers in Takayama are always competing with each other. Some of the sake have won international awards. Most breweries will serve you several tasting cups, so enjoy the difference and select the best souvenir. Be careful not to get drunk!
