All about Takayama City

  • Historic / Cultural Experiences

If we want to know the basic knowledge of Takayama, this museum is the best place. This museum was founded in 2011 in order to know history and culture of Takayama. There was a museum about history and culture of Takayama, which was founded in 1953. It was closed once. After that, it was renewed and reopened as a new museum. Therefore, “Takayama Museum of History and Art” has a lot of old data and exhibitions.

The admission to this museum is free. And, it opens relatively long. Although most facilities close at 5 pm. in Takayama, exhibition rooms open from 9 am to 7 pm. And, Conference Rooms and Gardens open until 9 pm. We can also use this museum as a resting place.
One of good plans is to visit here as a final spot in a day. However, if we appreciate this museum carefully, it takes about a few hours. And, if we want to learn everything in this museum deeply, we need to visit more than twice.

As for Takayama history, we can know about Kanamori Nagachika, a feudal lord about 400 ago, who founded the basic of Takayama City. In the Warring States period, he served Oda Nobunaga and participated in a turning point, Battle of Okehazama. And, he also served Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu.

And also, Kanamori family was engaged in Cha-do (the tea ceremony) and its culture deeply. So, Cha-do also influenced the basic of Takayama culture.

Takayama flourished as a castle town first. And then, merchants also developed Takayama City. There is also a Ginai preservation area, which was developed around temples. The cityscape is also very beautiful.

Although they are some key points of Takayama, we can know about Takayama from ancient times to present with a lot of data, photos, real examples and remains in this museum. Actually, these museum buildings themselves were founded with using some parts of old merchant houses.

And, there is a room where local student work is exhibited. We can learn about education and present atmosphere in Takayama.

There are exhibition rooms about Takayama festivals, arts and crafts, traditional ceremonies and events, religion, industry, security and life. We can learn about Takayama from various aspects.

So, after resting here, even though it is just strolling around the museum, it might be interesting. Actually, here is one of must-see places in Takayama.
