Start the day with a walk in a morning market
Miyagawa Morning Market starts in the early morning. In the summer, most shops open from 6 am. In the winter, they open from about 7 am, although it depends on weather conditions. And then, the shops close before noon.
Water of the Miyagawa River is very clean and transparent. You can see swimming carps and some other fishes. There are some beautiful bridges crossing the river. Those landscapes show the specific atmosphere of Takayama.
At the entrance of the Miyagawa Morning Market, you can see a big title of the market, "Miyagawa Asaichi" and many white strolls continuing along the street on the river side. And also, you can see many shops on the other side. Those shops still open in the afternoon.
You can buy fresh vegetables, flowers, sweets, dried seafood, sweets, deli food, handicrafts, daily commodities and souvenirs. This market is called the kitchen of Takayama city.
Miyagawa morning market is one of the three major morning markets in Japan. Others are Wajima morning market in the Ishikawa prefecture and Katsuura morning market in the Chiba prefecture. Compared to Wajima morning market, there seems to be not much seafood, although you can see many fresh vegetables and flowers.
They say that Miyagawa morning market started near the Takayama Betsuin temple in 1862 towards the end of the Edo period. In those days, mulberry leaves, vegetables and flowers were sold. After that, it was relocated to Miyagawa morning market and Jinya morning market. If you are interested in Jinya morning market, please go visit it! Jinya is also a famous sightseeing spot as it was a government office of the Edo period.
Takayama is a compact city. Although there is a route bus for tourists, actually, you can walk to many spots. Around the west exit of Miyagawa morning market, there are Kusakabe Heritage House, Old Private Houses and Sakurayama Hachimangu shrine. Around the east of Miyagawa morning market, there are Fuji Folk Museum and Sanmachi. Most facilities open after 9 am. So, it is one of good plans to visit Miyagawa morning market first before 9 am. And then, go walk around Takayama.
