1. Outline
Kinka-zan, or Mt. Kinka is located in the Center of Gifu city and visible everywhere from the city. Its height is 329 meters, and Gifu Castle has been built at the top of the mountain. The mountain is covered with natural forest trees and it stands along the Nagara River.
Mt. Kinka has two well-maintained trails for hikers who wish to climb up to the top. The Hundred-turn (Hyaku-magari) Hiking Trail and the Seven-turn (Nana-magari) Hiking Trail both begin near the Nawa Insect Museum in the southern part of Gifu Park. The Hyaku-magari is a 1,100 meters intermediate trail, and it takes 50 minutes to the top. The Nana-magari is a 1,900 meters trail for beginners, it takes about 60 minutes to the top.
There is another easier option to reach the top is by taking the Mt. Kinka Ropeway. It first opened in 1955, and visitors can reach the top of the mountain in less than five minutes. It is normally open from 9:00 to 18:00, but its operation time varies depending on the seasons. On weekdays, it runs every 15 minutes, and on weekends and holidays, it runs every 10 minutes.

2. Entrance Fee
Free of charge for Mountain Hiking Trail
If you take Kinka-Ropeway,
Adults : 1,080 yen (round trip), 620 yen (single trip)
Children : 540 yen (round trip), 280 yen (single trip)

3. Access
From Nagoya Station, take a Meitetsu line or JR line to Gifu Station (20 minutes).
From Meitetsu Gifu Station, go to Bus Stop No. 4, the other side of the road
From JR Gifu Station, go to Bus Terminal No. 12 and 13
Take a bus and about 10 minutes get off at Gifu Park, Rekishi-Hakubutsukan (Historical Museum) (210 yen), about 5 minutes’ walk to Kinka-Ropeway Station

4. My recommendations
If you have time, I recommend to hike to top of the Mountain, it takes only one hour and you will be just in the nature. If you prefer not to climb the mountain, you can take a Ropeway just one way, you can go down easily.
Around Kinka-zan, there are many charming spots where you find traditional life of Japan. Kawaramachi, in front of Gifu Park, is called Small Kyoto. There are remarkable temples near here, you can find Great Buddha in Shoho-ji, also Jozai-ji is a temple with important cultural property. In the evening, you can enjoy famous "Ukai" (Cormorant fishing), it is really like a Time Travel to many hundred years ago.

5. Best visit time
Spring is beautiful with Sakura cherry blossoms or other flowers. Autumn is also beautiful with colorful leaves around the mountain. Summer is hot, if you hike or walk to the mountain, please bring your own drinks.

6. Others
At the top of Mt. Kinka, there is an interesting Squirrel Village, where visitors can feed squirrels. Visitors can also learn about the difference of four species inside the Squirrel Village. If you are with kids, I recommend you to visit this village, surely kids like cute squirrels and will enjoy playing with them.
