The oldest castle in Japan and one of the most important National Treasures
Tourist center address：65-2 Kitakoken, Inuyama-city, AICHI pref.
Category : Castle
Opening hours : 9:00 - 16:30
Inuyama Castle, a National Treasure, is the oldest castle in Japan. The building was restored and repaired several times, but the main structure is still the original. The castle is located on the shore of the Kiso river, between Aichi and Gifu prefectures. Its first construction was completed in 1440. Te castle has been largely expanded several times, and the current main dungeons were completed in 1537, by Nobuyasu ODA, an important historical figure.
The dungeon of the Inuyama castle looks like a three-story building from the outside, but there are four stories inside, and two more stories including a landing in the basement. The total floor area is 699 square meters including the basement on the first and second floors doorway. The stone basement wall height is 5 meters. The height of the whole dungeon is 19 meters. You will see inside the real original castle building style of the 16th century.

4. My recommendations
I recommend to visit Inuyama castle more than Nagoya castle or Osaka castle because it is almost the original wooden building from more than 500 years ago. You can experience the warmth of the historical old wood, and you will find that this is a true National Treasure. You can hear the floor creeks when you walk in the castle. It is one of the best examples of Japanese traditional architecture.
5. Best visit time
Spring is beautiful with cherry blossoms, Autumn is also beautiful with colorful leaves around the castle. Summer is hot, there are many stairs inside the castle, please bring your own drinks.
You will be like Tonosama, the lord of the Castle, you can see the marvelous view, especially from the top of dungeon, the watchtower. You can observe the surroundings. When the weather is nice, you can see the view of beautiful Kiso river, Ontakesan volcano, Gifu castle, and other mountains, rivers and city buildings, such as Nagoya sation.
Nice and Simple Castle with a Historical Castletown
Take a little side trip if you are in Nagoya. You can get to Inuyama castle in about an hour from Nagoya station. Built in 1537, its donjon is one of the oldest of those that exist in Japan. The structure is built almost entirely with timbers and stones, using nails only for some floors. It is well-preserved, and unlike the other castles, there aren’t modern additions to it, so you can feel the authentic atmosphere.
The steep stairs in the castle may sometimes be scary, but on the top floor, you can enjoy the panoramic view of Kiso river and the castle town. Some displays inside the castle are also very simple but interesting. Take a look at the holes to attack the enemies and the armors of the lord.
Since there aren’t many exhibitions or explanation panels, I recommend you to take part in a free guided tour. Deeper understanding about the castle will surely make your visit more enjoyable. (There are always some English free guides there, but you should make a reservation in advance)
In addition, stroll through the streets of the castle town. There are some historical buildings and some cafes. Enjoy eating some of the cheap and delicious local skewer gourmet. Watching unique cormorant fishing on the Kiso river is also attractive, too.
