Mt Fuji is more than magnificent views and climbing trails. It is an integral part of craftsmanship, agriculture and fishing in our prefecture. Let me introduce you to the food that comes from around the mountain and the products that show the importance of this symbolic mountain in our culture.

Everyone knows Mt. Fuji (3,776m) is the highest mountain in Japan. For a long time, this symbol of Japan has been an object of worship. It has been featured in many works of art and literature not only because of its height but also because of its graceful and magnificent appearance. Mt. Fuji was registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 2013.

In recent years it has been reported that more than 300,000 people climb Mt. Fuji every year, of which approximately 30% are from abroad. There are four official routes to the summit of Mt. Fuji. The biggest one is the Yoshida route on the Yamanashi side. The others, Fujinimoya, Gotemba and Subashiri, are located on the Shizuoka side. Preparation is important before climbing. Every year many people lose their way on the mountain and end up in a place where they were not planning to go. Some people climb up to the summit and enjoy walking around the trail of crater rim (called Ohachi-meguri in Japanese), but take a different route down to an unexpected place without realizing it. Maps and other information for climbers are available at the Fujisan Tourist & Communication Bureau(at Shin-Fuji station) and the Gotemba City Tourist Association(close to Gotemba station). The map shows each trail with a different color. Appropriate preparation is needed to enjoy climbing.

☆ Climbing season: July to mid-September (depending on the rout.)
Some hiking courses are available May through mid-November
☆ The climbing fee is collected on a voluntary basis.(1,000yen)

Many tourists visit the fifth stations of the four trails. Here is a brief summary of each.

◆Gotemba 1,440m
Some good hiking courses are available between Fujinomiya Hoei crater and Gotemba fifth station.
・ Osunahashiri route (16km, about 4 hours)
・ Goten-niwa route (12km, about 3.5 hours)
・ Futako-yama & Makuiwa route (8km, about 3 hours)

It takes about 30 minutes on foot to get there.
