Visit the resting place of great Shogun

  • Temple / Shrine
  • Special Recommendations

Have you ever heard of Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa? I think he is the most famous Shogun in Japanese history. He is the important figure who united the nation for the first time. Toshogu Shrine was built right after Shogun Ieyasu’s death in the 17th century according to his living will. The deified spirit of Shogun Ieyasu was enshrined here.

The shrine attracts many tourists from home and abroad. The Gongen-style architecture buildings were all designated national important cultural properties and the Main Shrine was designated as the National Treasure. They are beautifully decorated with colorful lacquer and gold foil. The motifs and designs we see now symbolize the peace which Ieyasu really wanted during his whole life.

The shrine has a museum which houses swords and arms of Shogun and other interesting items belonging to Tokugawa Shogun’s family.

If you visit the grave of Shogun, you may find out why he chose the place as his final resting place.
