One Day Trip to a Scenic Gorge

Shosenkyo is a scenic gorge in Kofu, the capital city of the Yamanashi prefecture located in the west of the Tokyo metropolitan area. The water flows have been forming this gorge by eroding granite on the hillside. In 1953, the area, located in Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, was designated as one of Japan’s special scenic spots.

After a 30 minute bus ride from Kofu station, I arrived at the entrance of the gorge. Walking on a path, I could see several big rocks in mountain streams. Each rock has a unique form shaped by torrents. Near the end of this route, there is a natural gate of huge rocks called Ishimon covering the path. To see under the gate, there is a horizontal gap and I was amazed by the delicate balance created by the nature. After the gate, there is a symbol of Shosenkyo, Kakuen-po welcoming us on the left side. Kakuen-po is a precipice that was made by a single huge rock and it is said to be a place where ascetics used to discipline on its top. Next, I arrived at Sengataki waterfall. This waterfall is stunning all year long with backdrop of natural beauty.

There are souvenir shops and cafés after we ascend steps on the side of the waterfall. Yamanashi ships one third of all the gems nationwide and you can buy them at shops here.

From the shopping street, I took a rope way to the top of a mountain, visited a shrine there, then walked to the outlook spot on a big rock. The view of the surrounding mountains from there was superb.

Come and enjoy seasonal beauties of Shosenkyo.
