Cherry blossoms and a unique mountain

  • Cherry Blossom Viewing

Along the circuit garden road of Mt. Utatsu, there are about 250 cherry blossom trees. You can see them while driving. The type of cherry blossom is mainly "somei-yoshino". Although it depends on the year, you can usually see cherry blossoms from mid to late-April which is a little late compared to other areas in Kanazawa.

In the 400 year forest of Utatsuyama park (Mt Utatsu park), you can see different types of cherry blossoms such as "yama-zakura", "shidare-zakura", "yae-zakura", "somei-yoshino" and many more. At the top of Mt. Utatsu, you can also see cherry blossoms and the landscape of the city of Kanazawa. If it is a clear day, you can also see the Sea of Japan. The night view is very nice too.

There are also beautiful cherry blossoms in front of Kanazawa "Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo". It is an educational facility for handicrafts like ceramics, lacquerware, dyed textiles, metal works and glasses. After admiring
the cherry blossoms, you can also go see the temporary and permanent exhibitions of those handicrafts.

Besides, Mt. Utatsu is famous for being the home to many Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. There are about 50 Buddhist temples on Mt. Utatsu. It might be very interesting to walk among those temples and see cherry blossoms.
In the Edo period (1603-1868), Buddhist temples were gathered to prevent riots by Ikko Buddhists. It is said that it is why and how many temples first gathered on the mountain and that it used to be a large amusement place with many people walking among the temples. Although it has become a quiet place now, you can see many unique Buddhist temples like "Zenshoji" which has a gate with big straw sandals, "Housenji" which is famous for many stone statues and its breathtaking panoramic view or "Ryukokuji" which is related to the founder of Kaga yuzen textiles and many more temples.
You can also see monuments of haiku poems, literature and historic sites. There are very narrow streets like a maze, long stairs and a deep forest. It is impossible to see everything in a short period but Mt Utatsu is
to me one of the most interesting spots in Kanazawa.
