The best place to see masterpieces of traditional arts and crafts in Kanazawa

  • Arts

Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art is located about 5 minutes from “21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa” on foot. If we walk up a slope called Hirosaka and go through a beautiful walkway which has trees on both sides, we can find the museum among trees. It is across from Kenrokuen. So, after visiting Kenrokuen, we can also visit this museum from one of exits of Kenrokuen, Zuijinzaka-guchi.

Compared to 21st Century Museum, Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art has quiet atmosphere.
This museum exhibits masterpieces of arts and crafts mainly related to Ishikawa prefecture from ancient to present time.
Although there are many historic places in Kanazawa City, this museum is one of the best places to appreciate traditional arts and crafts.
In this museum, there are many works of art registered as National Treasure or Important Cultural Properties in Japan.

"Incense burner in the shape of pheasant decorated with overglaze enamels" by Nonomura Ninsei is one of representative arts and crafts in this museum. This is one of national treasure. We can find it in Japanese text books. Although taking a photograph is prohibited in this museum, only this exhibition is permitted to take a picture.

As other representative arts and crafts, there are many pieces of pottery and porcelain, lacquer ware, costumes, decorative arms and pictures.
Kutaniyaki is traditional porcelain originated in Ishikawa prefecture. Very decorative and delicate painting on the surface is one of features. And, we can see Imariyaki and many other pieces of porcelain.

As for lacquer ware, Wagimanuri is famous as original art crafts in Ishikawa prefecture. And, we can see them in this museum.

When I visited this time, a special exhibition about Kaga Maeda domain was taking place. Kaga is an old name of this region including Ishikawa prefecture. From treasure of Kaga domain, we can imagine some climax times in this region.

Next to Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, there is a red-brick building. It is Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History. It might be good to visit after visiting Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art. And also, if you walk for about 10 minutes, we can find a famous slope called Yomezaka. It is also one of historic sightseeing spots of Kanazawa. Kanazawa is famous for some tasteful slope scenery. Actually, Kanazawa is full of sightseeing spots which we must visit.
