The best place to see masterpieces of traditional arts and crafts in Kanazawa

  • Arts

Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art is located about 5 minutes from the “21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa” on foot. If you walk up a slope called Hirosaka and go through a beautiful walkway which has trees on both sides, you can find the museum among trees. It is across the street from Kenrokuen park. So, after visiting Kenrokuen, you can also visit this museum by leaving Kenrokuen park from the Zuijinzaka-guchi exit.

Compared to the 21st Century Museum, Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art has a quiet atmosphere.
This museum exhibits masterpieces of arts and crafts mainly related to the Ishikawa prefecture from ancient to present time.
Although there are many historic places in Kanazawa city, this museum is one of the best places to appreciate traditional arts and crafts.
In this museum, there are many works of art registered as National Treasure or Important Cultural Properties in Japan.

"Incense burner in the shape of pheasant decorated with overglazed enamels" by Ninsei NONOMURA is one of the most famous pieces in this museum. This is a Living National Treasure that can be found in Japanese text books. Although taking photos is prohibited in this museum, you can take photos in this exhibition only.

As other representative arts and crafts, there are many pieces of pottery, porcelain, lacquerware, textiles etc.
Kutani ware is traditional porcelain of the Ishikawa prefecture. It is very decorated and has delicate paintings on the surface. And, you can see Imari ware and many other famous types of porcelain.
Wajima lacquerware is a famous type of lacquerware from the Ishikawa prefecture.

Last time I visited the museum, there was a special exhibition about the Kaga Maeda domain. Kaga is the old name of this region. By admiring the treasures of the Ishikawa prefecture, I could imagine how rich and beautiful was already hundreds of years ago.

Next to the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art, there is a red-brick building. It is the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of History. It might be good to visit it after visiting the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art. And also, if you walk for about 10 minutes, you can find a famous narrow hill road called Yomezaka. It is also one of the historic sightseeing spots of Kanazawa. Kanazawa is famous for having many charming narrow hill roads.
