Full of fresh seafood and vegetables in the kitchen of Kanazawa

  • Shopping

Omicho market is the best place to buy seasonal food.

In the morning, just after many stores open around 9 am, you can see and select a wide variety of food.
In the daytime, it might be one of the best places to have lunch in Kanazawa.
In the evening, you can buy some goods at cheaper price. Most shops close around 5 pm except some shops in the new building, Omicho Ichibakan.

Omicho Market is like a maze. There are many narrow roads so it is a little complicated. If you walk around the market, you can see many fresh seafood, meat, vegetables, fruits and deli. There are also cafes and restaurants and, if you buy a lot of food, you can have it delivered.
They say that many restaurants owners in Kanazawa buy seasonal ingredients in Omicho market.
And, not only food, you can also buy flowers, tea, sweets, clothes and daily commodities in this market.

In 1690, a fish market in Fukuro-machi, Kanazawa was relocated to Omi-cho. And then, in 1721, a market in the mouth of the Sai river was also moved to Omi-cho. That is how the original Omicho market was formed.
In the photographs of the early 19th century, you can see many fish, dried fish, chicken and some other shops so it was already a big market.

In 2009, a new building, Omicho Ichibakan was founded. In that building, there are some food and commodity shops on the first and second floor. And also, there are some social welfare facilities to help organize events
for different communities on the third and fourth floor, and a consumer information center, care and labor center on the fifth floor. Therefore, Omicho market seems to be not only a market but also the center of the community.
It might be interesting, just walking through the market to feel the atmosphere as well as shopping.
