The warehouse which was renovated to be a shopping complex

  • Sightseeing

There are two photogenic red brick warehouses on the seaside of Yokohama; they used to be bonds warehouses, which were built in the early 20th century. Now they have been renovated and house shops, restaurants, a café and a gallery, which attract lots of visitors all year around.

During the Meiji period, after the phase of isolation, it was essential for Japan to catch up with Western countries. The government developed the port and state-of-the-art warehouses equipped with elevators and sprinklers, and the place became a distribution base. One of the characteristics of red brick is that is strong with fire but prone to earthquake. An architect who designed the building introduced the way to make the structure stronger by putting iron materials into the bricks. About 10 years later, the Great Kanto Earthquake happened, and they were damaged somehow, but the damage of the building was minimal. The special idea worked in this way. Later they were restored and started working as a warehouse again. Also they were once a property of America during the war, then returned to Japan, 80 years later after it’s built; they finished their roles as warehouse. Then they were renovated and started a new history. Red bricks were used a lot after the Meiji period, and you can see some of the buildings with red bricks in Yokohama.

If you are interested in architecture, there are some pieces of equipment left inside and outside of the building, and you can look at them and see what they were like. The premise of the red brick warehouse is like a park as a whole, which is facing the sea.

You can see Osanbashi pier and several ships. The restaurants and cafes here are nice, which include a green tea café, Bills from Australia and Kua’Aina from Hawaii. Some events are held occasionally, one of which is Oktoberfest, needless to say, the beer festival from Germany. Those events and restaurants somehow have international feelings because of the character of Yokohama.

Opening hours: (shops and cafes) 10:00-19:00
