Hidden sacred place in the woods

  • Temple / Shrine

When you see the lake Ashi from the Motohakone area, you will find a vermilion gate called torii on the water which seems to be floating. It may seem strange to find only a gate because normally there is a Shinto shrine behind the gate. But you will just see the woods and mountains behind the gate. Actually in the woods, there is a big Shinto shrine complex called Hakone Shrine. The view of the combination of the gate and Mt. Fuji is a symbolic view of Hakone.

From a long time ago, the highest mountain in the area, Kamiyama (1438), has been worshiped as a God because it is a volcanic mountain so people wanted to prevent eruptions. 2400 years ago, one of the shrine's priests made a place to worship on the mountain next to it, Komagatake (1356m). This is the beginning of the shrine. And in the 8th century, the first shrine construction was built in the place you find the shrine now.

You can approach this shrine on foot in about 10 minutes from Motohakone (either by bus or cruise ship).

In the precinct of the shrine covered with woods including old cedar trees, you may have a calm and sacred feeling.
