Next to busy and crowded Sensoji buddhist temple, this small Shinto shrine quietly and peacefully stands in Asakusa district

  • Temple / Shrine

This is located in the northeast area of Tokyo called Asakusa, old downtown and close to the city's new landmark 'Tokyo Skytree'.

Around the 12th century, this Shinto shrine was originally built and enshrines three people as gods who are related to this shrine. They are two fisherman brothers who found out Kannon Bodhisattva statue from the Sumida river in the 7th century and a village leader at that time who changed his own house into a buddhist temple to store Kannon statue and later became a monk.

The most important time through the year for this shrine is 'SANJA MATSURI festival' which takes place in May for three days. During this festival the portable shinto shrine called MIKOSHI is moved around the town by Asakusa locals. By doing so, town people show the gods to other people in order to get them god blessing.

Locals who join the festival wear a special outfit called "happi", a kind of festival costume, which looks like a traditional yet very cool jacket.

In SANJA MATSURI festival, 1.5 million visitors come during three days. If you are in Japan in May, you can't miss this!
