A Shinto shrine for Cherry blossoms and war

  • Temple / Shrine

One of the most famous and controversial shinto shrines in Japan.

In the spring, you will be fascinated by hundreds of cherry blossom, 'sakura' trees here. Under the cherry blossoms, people bring foods, sweets even beers & sakes! Japanese people love to have party when 'sakura' are full bloom. Because sakura once opened its bloom continues just two or three weeks, so we feel how short is its life! While its bloom we must enjoy it, that is how Japanese people feel when they see cherry blossoms. Viewing cherry blossom is not only enjoying its beauty but we see our life, that's why sakura trees are so special for us. Also, one of these cherry trees is treated as Tokyo standards tree to check its opening. Once the tree makes a bloom, Japanese Meteorological Agency officially announces it starts in Tokyo!

Why this shinto shrine is so controversial is because this shrine enshrined not only war victims but also war criminals especially A-class criminals on WWⅡ. Chinese and Korean governments criticize when our prime minister and ministry members go and pray there.

However if you visit this shrine, you realize how calm and quiet it is and you find no propaganda things on war.

Also you can have a lot at war museum where there is an exhibition of ZERO-type fighter airplane.
