The Former Hokkaido Government Office Building is nicknamed “Aka renga”, means “Red Bricks”. It was constructed in 1888 in Meiji era as a base for the Hokkaido administration. The building was designed by Hokkaido Government engineers. This beautiful American neo-baroque-style structure inspired by Massachusetts State House was built by entirely from local materials, especially about 2.5 million local bricks used. The inside of the building was burned by a fire in 1909, however the red brick walls fortunately sustained little damage so that it could be quickly rebuilt in 1911. The red brick building was designated as the important cultural property of Japan in 1969.

You can freely roam inside the building to watch beautiful fixtures such as entrance hall, three-section arch, staircases with thick red carpet, and commemorative room on the second floor as well as the exhibitions such as the archives of Hokkaido and Gallery of Hokkaido’s History.

In contrast, the current Hokkaido Government Office Building the west behind Akarenga is a boring concrete building, however on weekdays if you go to the cafeteria in its basement which is open to the public, you can taste lunch at reasonable price, please avoid peak time from 12 to 13 o’clock.

Another feature of Akarenga is the beautiful forecourt, the ponds and the gardens are located at the both sides of the forecourt. There are 1,000 trees of 100 varieties in the gardens, they includes Japanese elms, poplars, maples and cherry blossoms. So you can enjoy beautiful scene with migrant ducks on the ponds if you are lucky. It could be also pleasant to encounter some events in the forecourt on sunny day.
