A witness and symbol of Sapporo

  • Historical Building

The Clock Tower has been a symbol of Sapporo ever since it was built in 1878. The Tower was constructed as a military drill hall for Sapporo Agriculture College, which is now Hokkaido University. This is the oldest clock tower in Japan. In 1881, 3 years after completion of the building, the clock, purchased from E. Howard & Co., of Boston, Massachusetts, was installed in the building. In 1970, Sapporo Clock Tower was designated as an important cultural property of Japan. The Clock Tower’s simple wooden structure is typical of American houses found in the Mid-west and the West during the colonization. It was influenced by Western instructors and engineers hired by the Hokkaido Development Commission. Sapporo was only a small 3,000 inhabitants town when the Clock tower was built but it has now an over 1.9 million inhabitants.

The first floor of the building serves as museum introducing the history of the clock tower, Sapporo and Sapporo Agriculture College. The second floor is used as a ceremony and concert hall.

Please do not miss the clock ringing every hour as the bell counts the number of hours. The system of the clock, the pendulum and the weight were not changed from the origin, there is still no electricity or battery.
At 9:15 the explanation of the system is presented by the curator on the second floor and a tower clock of the same type that was installed in New York state in 1928 is exhibited.

Photos of the tower can be taken from several spots on the ground of the tower, but I would like to recommend the outside deck on the second floor of the opposite building, so that you can take the whole tower. In the late evening you will be more impressed by the fantastic illumination by LED lightings than during the daylight.
