The first lacquer-specialized museum in Japan and the first public museum in Okinawa

  • Shopping

The museum opened in 1990 as the first lacquerware-specialized museum in Japan and the first public museum in Okinawa. There are some other museums on the island with different themes in these days, but this place comes top on my list for its selection of special exhibitions and the permanent exhibition, Ryukyu lacquerware.

The permanent exhibition room has five rooms, and they exhibit Ryukyu lacquerware collections and some others from mainland Japan and other counties through the year, and the collections are changed three times a year with different themes. Audio guide is available for the permanent exhibition area for free.

The environment of the museum is wonderful. The tasteful building, which looks like a group of domes or towers, was an art work by the late Shozo Uchii, the renowned architecture who also designed the residence of Takamadonomiya and Setagaya Museum. The museum is surrounded with greens and other public facilities, and even a butterfly rearing facility, named “Tedako-chou House” in which you can see a black and white big butterfly, Oogomadara (Idea Leuconoe) for free entrance fee. If you are in that area, I would recommend checking out a famous Okinawa noodle restaurant, Tedako Soba, for lunch and a nice café, Happy Berry, to try their muffins and cakes, etc. Both places are located in walking distance.
